Good Shepherd Church, Durham, NC, hosted the April 18, 1998 meeting of Eastern Carolina Presbytery. RE Jeff Smith of the host church presided as Moderator. Host pastor TE David Bowen led in worship, including the Lord's Supper, and Murray Garrott preached from Colossians 2 as part of his ordination trials.

Mr. Garrott's examination for ordination was sustained, and approval given to his call.

The Rev. Mr. Ken Remer explained the work of Wycliffe/JAARS, and invited the brethren to the JAARS Bar-B-Que and Fly-in on May 2, 1998 at their facility in Waxhaw, NC. He also distributed free copies of a CD for computers, "Wycliffe Explorer", which are normally for sale.

Presbytery voted to approve the termination of the Stated Supply relationship between TE Denver Blevins, effective immediately. The court determined that the Session could request the dissolution of this relationship without congregational vote.

Presbytery heard reports from several of its ministers: Ron Morrell, who is in a year- long residency for a chaplaincy position; TE Norm Evans, who just resigned his pastorate at Trinity Church, Wilmington; TE James B. Moore, whose report was written read by the Stated Clerk, and who has a chronic health problem.

At the January 1998 meeting, the Presbytery had erected an investigative committee to look into the theology of TE Byron Curtis, who is a professor of Bible at Geneva College. At this meeting, Presbytery sustained the complaint, acknowledged error in taking that action, and dissolved the committee. A motion to erect another committee to inquire into the views of TE Byron Curtis was ruled this motion out of order; upon challenge, the chair was sustained, 21-9.

The court then amended the docket so that the out-of-order motion could be entertained. The motion to amend the docket passed by the requisite two-thirds, 18-9.

A motion to reconstitute a committee to inquire into Byron Curtis' six exceptions which he stated before Ascension Presbytery was moved and seconded. Presbytery adopted a substitute asking Mr. Curtis for a clarification of his views by the July meeting of presbytery.

TE Percy Coleman was dismissed to the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. His church, Progressive Presbyterian of Princeton, NC, had earlier withdrawn from the Presbytery and had been received by the ARP.

Presbytery approved the call of the Rev. Mr. Mark Steimer as Associate Pastor of Christ Church. The court approved Ru Sen's internship. Daniel Kirk's candidacy was transferred to Philadelphia Presbytery, pending Sessional approval.

Presbytery memorialized RE Dwight Monk.
